Embrace Elegance with Silver, White, and Ocean Blue Travertine

Ocean Blue Travertine

From the ancient Roman Colosseum to the futuristic Getty Center building in Los Angeles, Travertine has traveled through time and has been carved into new identities. This variety of limestone is widely popular among architects and interior designers. Travertine is the terrestrial limestone formed by prolonged sedimentation of calcium carbonate around the mouth of hot springs, lakes, and limestone caves.

Italy houses some of the largest travertine quarries along with Peru, Mexico, Iran, and China. Travertine is often marketed as “travertine marble.” Even though marble and travertine share the same parent rock, limestone, they exhibit significant aesthetic and textural differences. While marble is known for its contrasting light background and deep veins, travertine is prized for its tone-on-tone palette, which ranges from cream, beige, ivory, and tan to silver and grey. Its desirable weathered look lends a feel of timelessness to the interiors. In this blog, let us explore the beauty of popular travertine surfaces available in 2cm and 3cm thicknesses and matching patterns.

Silver Travertine (2cm & 3cm, Honed/Filled)

Silver Travertine

The peaceful sound of frothy waves lapping against the shore will echo in your ears at the sight of beautiful Silver Travertine surfaces. The muddy grey, sandy beige, and foamy white bands stretch across its surface in gentle ripples, creating a perfect beach palette. It looks best in a honed finish, where the matte texture and muted colors add rustic charm to any design setting. If you prefer minimalist decor, Silver Travertine—humble and inspiring—can be a great addition to your interiors. On the flip side, it can also work well in maximalist luxury design schemes, balancing out flashy details. Design interiors that capture the joie de vivre of life and feel like a warm hug on a winter’s day.

White Travertine (2cm & 3cm, Honed/Filled)

“Very Demure, Very Mindful!” – the viral TikTok catchphrase has recently stirred up social media influencers, inspiring them to show how to be demure and mindful in everything, everywhere. We have the perfect stone suggestion for you to join this trend alongside other interior design aficionados: consider designing a mindful kitchen clad in the very demure White Travertine surfaces. Not too tan or deadpan, its background features the perfect shade of beige, highlighted by slightly darker and lighter ripples that emulate the soft ruffles of fabric. Its understated elegance adds character to any space without overshadowing other decor elements.

Ocean Blue (2cm & 3cm, Honed/Filled)

Quarried in Italy, Ocean Blue travertine is regarded for its organic look. It features linear bands in silver, grey, and beige, boasting a pleasing interplay of light and dark hues. This travertine exudes earthy vibes, adding an organic touch to the design scheme of residential and commercial spaces. Furthermore, travertine surfaces are naturally pitted, making them prone to accumulate dust over time if pores are left open. Filling those indentations with clear or cement epoxy makes the surfaces more functional and durable. Ultra Stones’ Ocean Blue Travertine is available in honed and filled finish.

These tips will help you maintain travertine surfaces:

Don’t Let Spills Linger on the Surface: Compared to marble and granite, travertine is a porous stone. It can absorb liquids, which can eventually stain the surface. Therefore, it might be handy to have a soft sponge and neutral pH soap water solution ready to wipe up spills immediately. Food spills or even water can lead to stubborn stains on the surface since it is naturally pitted.

Prevent Scratches and Etches: Use trivets and chopping boards while cutting vegetables on travertine countertops. Sharp objects can scratch the surfaces. Similarly, travertine can form etch spots in contact with domestic acidic substances such as lemon juice, wine, and coffee. Therefore, any acidic spills must be taken care of immediately. Avoid using acidic products or abrasive materials to clean the stone.

Seal Your Stones Religiously: Travertine is prone to scratching and acid etching. While minor impacts are not visible on honed or matte surfaces, it is still advised to seal the stone with a proper penetrating sealer to increase its longevity. To know if travertine surfaces need a reseal, try putting a few drops of water on the surface and if the stone color darkens or develops ring marks, it is time for a reseal therapy. Sealing natural stone surfaces is always a good option as it benefits their durability. To know more, visit Ultra Stones’ travertine care and maintenance page.

Travertine surfaces are truly unique. Their antique appearance makes spaces ageless and serene. Natural porous structure contributes to the stone’s physical brilliance, making it resistant to chipping. Another special ability of travertine includes heat regulation, which helps maintain a comfortable temperature both indoors and outdoors. Such amazing attributes make this natural stone a perfect feature for designing aesthetic and functional spaces.
